Default Ultradisc 24KT Gold CD-Rs by MoFi (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab)? - 04-22-2007 , 08:14 PM

Has anybody here ever tried the following kind of blank CD-R?....

http://www.mofi.com/productcart/pc/v...1&idproduct=41

Should we, or anybody else, have any reason(s) to believe that the
data/music burned on them are more likely to not corrupt over the
years and more likely to remain uncorrupted longer than the data/music
burned on CD-Rs of brands that have the very best reputations...such
as Taiyo Yuden and/or older Mitsui? Or are they just a rip-off,
especially at such high prices? We would appreciate any helpful
advice...thank you.

I've not tried those discs, but you are asking the right sort of
question. 'Archival' discs from people like MAM-A (Mitsui from America
today) carry a premium based on their limited market and presumed higher
cost for gold instead of silver metallizing and for quality control.
There is no information available (at least, to the public) supporting
the claims of longer life; I suspect that the T-Y media I have been
using for some years are just as good over decades as the archival
blanks, but have no evidence on either side.

That said, it should be noted that the cases for MAM-A are of a new and
superior design; that alone hardly justifies the price, but it may be a
factor.

No, it has no better odds of surviving long term. there's no evidence that
the reflective material used has any effect on longevity. What DOES matter
is the care and quality in the disc manufacturing process. There are equally
good and bad examples of every type of disc.

Given appropriate precautions and storage, (and assuming that one accepts
the premise that any optical disc is appropriate for "archival use"), any
good quality disc will suffice. Taiyo Yuden is more sensitive to heat and UV
than others, but if it's stored right it doesn't matter. What TY has that
most others do not, is high quality manufacturing and quality control.
