Default Editing a movie - 05-10-2007 , 10:21 PM

Help please
I'm trying to edit an old musical for increased viewing pleasure --
it's the Fred and Ginger musical 'Flying Down to Rio' which runs for
90 minutes, but has really only about 30 minutes of enjoyable viewing
in it .. some of those old movies are really creaky nowadays.
I've taken my Region One Warners disc and copied it using DVDShrink
reauthoring so that my temporary throw-away DVD has only the VOB
files. That disc works just fine; perfect picture and sound.
I then put it into my standalone Panasonic hard disc DVD recorder,
using that machine's Copy function. That way, I intend to then make
use of the Panasonic's inbuilt editing function which makes editing a
movie a breeze -- on my computer I can use Nero's editing tools to
snip the beginning or end of VOB files, but it won't let me edit
selectively in the middle of a file.
So far so good. I can play the copied DVD on my Panasonic, and it
looks and sounds fine. But when I record that DVD onto the hard drive,
I get perfect image -- and the sound has been totally stripped away.
What's going on with the recording process? Why won't it record both
image and sound? I am setting the Panasonic for NTSC, so it's not a
problem with format .. it just won't record successfully.
If I can't use the Panasonic for this editing purpose (which to my
mind is a legitimate use since I own and will be keeping the complete
movie, and just using my edited version for private viewing), is there
freeware out there which will let me do this sort of editing on my
Windows computer?

Check the MPEG Editing listings at www.videohelp.com
and there are more for Windows than for any other OS.

I would suggest you get acquainted with either VideRedo or Womble mpeg
editing programs (not freeware). But a good freeware program for simple top
and tailing and editing out commercials is MPEGStreamclip
http://www.squared5.com/ and you can output to a range of formats .

Why not do the whole job with DVDShrink?
Assuming you don't want to cut out more than 99 segments of the video.
When reauthoring, add the main movie then right click on it and set the
start and end frames for the first segment.
Add the main movie again and set the start and end for the second segment.
Repeat until you have all the segments you want.

Wow, brings back memories of tuning in to Z-Channel with Betamax
hooked up, thumb poised over the pause/record button, to capture
ONLY Fred or Gene solo dance numbers or with whatever partners
they may have had. A slight fabrication - I doubt Fred or Gene
flicks ever played on Z-Channel in the 70's, if at all?

Now, I actually have all of the DVDs and/or full MPEG2 TV
captures and I actually have enjoyed watching the full movies
more than once each. I have some friends who, like you at this
moment or me 30+ years ago, want to fast forward to the next
dance - I just lend them the DVD.

The contract players who appeared regularly in RKO/MGM flicks
were a big part of the enjoyment of these films. Silly plot
lines hammed up by journeyman actors dressed to the nines on
exotic sets while depression raged outside the theater. And how
about the girls on the wings? Or Eric Blore, not to ignore
Victor Moore and Helen Broderick - Hollywood at its best;-0)

Poor Donald O'Connor, to have been born late into the era of
Fred and Gene:-(

Anyway, Derek has the answer, if you must butcher these flicks?

Like you I really enjoy watching the complete movies -- and I'd never
chop into Top Hat or Gay Divorcee for instance. But yesterday we had
some friends over for lunch, and it was great to follow with a half-
hour of Rio ... and of course, preparing these edited versions doesn't
mean I'll be parting with my Deluxe Warners Collectors Edition ......
Erik Rhodes was a great bit-player -- when watching him do his Italian
bit in 'Divorcee', it's hard to imagine he was really English! And
yes, I did this editing thing a score or more of years ago on VHS (two
machines linked together) and the result was seamless...... strangely,
my 'complete' VHS tape of Rio had the second-half of the Carioca
missing! Censorship, perhaps?
Love those girls on the wings. 'Ouch. That hurt......'
And ps -- Derek's method worked really well except for a slight pause
in-between segments. That's not too annoying if edited at the right
moments...
