Default newbie question - 05-13-2007 , 08:47 PM

Hi,

I have multiple mpg files (PAL, MPEG-1 format) and need to
create DVDs that are playable on most DVD players in the US (those
that support PAL?). Could somebody please tell me which freeware will
help me on that? No editing is needed, just combining them is
enough. Thank you very much in advance.

Most DVD players in the US do not support PAL. They will reject the
disk. Most players will play PAL formats if the .IFO headers are
changed to indicate NTSC. This is however lying to the player, and it
works on 60-75% of the players. I wouldn't advise taking a chance on
that unless you are sending to a friend or reletive.

Converting PAL to NTSC is time consuming and can produce artifacts.
One is taking one highly compressed encoded format at 25 fps and
converting it to another highly compressed format at 29.97 fps. I
have also never thought that the aspect ratio looked right on these.
If one has access to the original material, then encoding in the
target format is most desirable.

I have given up on converting and now have a couple Oppo players.

Freeware for authoring DVDs is available. Look at DvdAuthorGUI for
one.

Thank you very much for the info. I downloaded DVDauthorGUI and used
it. I don't know how, but it works! :-)
Even though it complained and I had to demultiplex all mpg files with
batchdemux first.

Hm. All the DVD players I've purchased will play PAL discs and
transcode them to NTSC.

However - the default settings in the DVD players for standards
are usually 'automatic' which means that whatever the format
of the DVD, that is what will be put out.

In the setup menus on the players I have used there is
a place that has 'automatic' 'ntsc' and 'pal'. That setting
determines the output to your TV.

By setting the menu ot 'ntsc' any PAL disks you play will
be transcoded to NTSC.

Some of the older players do not transcode as well as others.

Take a look at the setup menus for the DVD player to see
if these options are there. Since it's much cheaper to manufacture
a player that will work anywhere in the world and then have it
default to 'automatic' - that is what you will see quite often.

The older player I had wasn't too great at transcoding, and in one
when I put on the English intertitles [on a classic silent film]
the titles would be about 1/4 down the screen with the original
German titles being correct. A later model of this player
[Philips] does a decent job of transcoding and I don't see
many problems on my 36" Wega.

Those are on my list for the next player I get. And as I recall
don't the Oppo players have a 'zoom-out' feature to be able to
see all the picture as so often the edges are cropped in standard
dvd players.
