New Panasonic DMR-XW51 with twin digital tuner and a whopping 1Tb Hard
Drive.

Some product info along with a picture on what they look like at the
front and at the back at:
http://www.salesmart.com.au/panasonic/

Please Note I do not sell these. Just know quite a few wanting to know
what is coming. These new recorders are already out in Japan. Hoping
one day they'll reach my part of the world.

I have been very disapointed by Panasonic DMR-EH65. Cannot copy my VHS tape

is a pain in the a...

I am not going to try another one !

They won't do commercial VHS movies from VHS to DVD as they are copy
protected.

I own the E30, EH60 and EX75 and sold my EH55 last year.

I have transfered hundreds of my VHS home videos from VHS to DVD since
I bought my first Panasonic DMR-E30 way back in April of 2003.

The latest ones will do VHS but only if they do not have copy right on
the VHS tapes.

Just about everyonme I know own a Panasonic with the odd other one
that uses a Pioneer standalone DVD recorder. I just think they are so
good with what they do from VHS to DVD or recording shows to watch
back later.

As for the manuals I don't know anyone that likes the way the manual
has been written. These news grpups are quite good for posting
questions alo9ng with the web forum sites about Panasonic recorders.
Post a question and there will be quite a few with detailed replies on
what to do. aus.dvd is wher I hang out. I come in here every 6 months
or so to see what's going on in this news group.

Each to their own and all that.

Well, too bad for them. With a special device, those are the only tapes that
it can really copy...

Well, mine doesn't, about one out of two (including home movies). A 3 weeks
vacations into Panasonic's
aftersales changed nothing (True, I think they did not do anything to it
anyway !)

At least I am glad it is not a full line failure, juste mine, it seems. That
does not make
me happy, however !

I am not saying anything about the manual, but about the 'Guide+' feature,
supposed to
help in programming progams. In mine, it just truncates nightly programs and
there is no way
to really disable it. Well just two hours of power on every days is that it
takes...

I suppose you've tried another AV channel on your DVD recorder and are
you setting the recorder to the right AV channel.

The Panasonics have 4 AV channels to try from.

Try AV3 (red/white/yellow RCA) port at the front.
Or try one of the other AV channels.

When recording from VHS to DVD the recorder must be set to the AV
channel that has the VCR in. So if AV3 then set the recorder to AV
channel 3. Otherwise nothing will happen.

It mught just be a setting thing. Its rare for this to happen. I can't
ever remember an AV channel failing. Something else to look at is make
sure the RCA are in the right settings on the VCR.

If you like I can take a picture on how I have mine set up and upload
it to a temp folder on my web site so you can see how it ought to be
set up.

The Guide+ that are on yor recorders are not on the Australian models.
We only get the Program screen where we set the time to start and end
and setting the channel. We also get G-Code but to me that is a
useless thing to have as out in Australia programs rarely start and
finish on time. If I was to set shows to end at a certain time
according to G-Code I could lose the last 30 mins to an hour of a
show.

No way to disable it? I own a Panasonic EH-55 and first thought that
there was no way to disable it, but that was because of the manual
being defective. You can disable it by making a new setup... and
*then* not choosing for guide+. Without a new setup it won't work.

When recording from VHS to DVD the recorder must be set to the AV
channel that has the VCR in. So if AV3 then set the recorder to AV
channel 3. Otherwise nothing will happen.

This has nothing to do with failure to show the picture. The problem is that
as soon as the video comes
THROUGH the recorder, it is garbled and almost black and white. This shows
directly on the TV,
as well as on the record. It varies with the tape, sometimes is it ok,
sometimes the whole tape is
bad, sometimes it is just intermittent (but always at the same place in the
tape).

My feeling is that just the 'color' signal seen by the recorder is too low,
and the input video stage are failing.

This happens whatever AV channel is used, and what VCR is playing.

You are not missing much. The Guide takes too long to receive the
informations, and it is useless
anyway with TNT or any cable/Satellitte receiver.

The G-code (here called otherwise) works fine with the number given in the
magazine. It is just a pity
that there is not an option to automatically extend the time by 5/10 minutes
before and 30 minutes
after. The programs are likely to be late most of the time. This has to be
done by hand. My last
VCR was adding 10 minutes automatically.

I thought so before, but then I found out that unless you let it set up
completely first, there is no way
to get to the 'GUIDE + option screen' (It just says 'you cannot do that for
the moment'), so there is not way
to set the 'load at night' option OFF.

If this option is not set, recording set for the 1 am to 5 am are very
likely to be truncated. There is a
message warning that it could happen when you set a record, and it DOES
truncate a late night
program.

There may be another way to set this, but I cannot find it.
