Default -R's or + R's Arghhh! - 03-23-2007 , 12:38 PM

Here's an old question that's been beat to death, but...
Which is better for DVD burning, -R's or + R's ?

Are there particular "tweak" settings in decoding software - DVD Decrypter
v3.5.4.0; the shrinking software - DVD Shrink v3.2; and, or the burning
software - DVD Shrink v3.2, Nero Burning ROM v7.5.7.0, or ImgBurn v2.2.0.0?

The only real relevant information I could find (which dealt mostly with
RW's) was at: http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-...perior-to-DVD-
RW, and it seems most of the m like the +R's.

We have always said that -Rs are more compatible with older players
than +Rs. But there are not so many older players anymore. For
personal use, either/or. For distribution to others where the type of
equipment is unknown, -R for historical sake.

For RWs most have liked the +RWs the best, but I only use -RW as my
Pioneer recorder only accepts -RWs, not +RWs.

In reality, both will probably work just fine for you.

Cheers...

Hi Mark, same here, I also have a Pioneer DVD recorder DVR-630H-S & for
recording purposes it only accepts -R, -RW. As for Playback all types are
acceptable. In my PC & Laptop I have never had any problems burning or
playing either format; but do have relatives who can only use one format
only. I thought DVD-R were the more recent but apparently that's not the
case...

Right, I agree with Mark & Buchetamo, both work fine and it's
more a matter of what's compatible with your equipment.

I use +R(W), and as your CDfreaks article points out there
are a few features/characteristics that favor them, but there
were things that favored Beta over VHS. Either one can do
what they were designed to do, and record the information
you want them to. Assuming you are using a compatible
machine, of course.

If you are distributing them in any way, the compatibility
issue might trump any other technically favorable features.
The general consensus is that the -R are a little less likely
to cause compatibility issues, in a wider distribution.

That said, you can use "bitsetting" on +R so that they
appear to the playing drive as if they were a pressed
commercial disk. As I understand it that only works
with +R not -R.

Luck;
Ken

This article strongly recommends +R:

I've been using Taiyo Yuden -R, but am trying their +R with my next batch.
