Default Why won't my burned DVDs play anymore? - 03-05-2007 , 11:02 PM

I've been downloading and burning movies to DVD for about a year with
no problems. Over about the past week or so, I've been finding that my
DVD player will no longer play the DVDs I'm burning. DVDs that I
burned previously still work, as do commercially purchased DVDs. It
just seems to be newly burned DVDs that will not work. It's the same
DVD player I've always used (JVC XV-521). I did start using a new DVD
burner recently, but that was several months before the problem
started. Before then, everything worked fine. I was using the same
software I've always used and only started to try new software when I
started to have problems. My standard setup is to download the movie
from Azureus, convert to DVD files with VSO DivxtoDvd and then burn
with Nero. I've also tried ConvertXtoDvd as an encoder and Sonic MyDVD
Plus to burn (the burning software that came with my PC) My DVDs seem
to work in other players, and on the PC. Any idea why they might stop
working on my DVD player? I'm thinking that a setting may have been
changed, but I'm not sure where to start looking, and I don't recall
changing anything...

Thanks

Did you change media type? Note that the big labels use a variety of media
types and can switch them on you without notice.

Highly likely to be the DVDR media not being accepted by the player.
Try other recordable media.... Or it could be the DVD writer that is past
its best.

Try looking around in the tabs to set a slower burning speed. It's
happened on a couple of machines with me, my sister's pc only just
yesterday was fixed with that when a disk in the drive would all but
lock the computer up. The drive didn't even show up as a device with her
burning software until I set it to pick a speed I thought was best when
initially all was fine in the first months of her owning it.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think I've discovered the problem.
My DVD burner will use DVD+R and DVD-R equally, but I've just noticed
that all of the DVDs I've played on my stand alone DVD player have
been DVD+R. Guess who just bought a spindle of 50 DVD-R? I'm in the
process of testing my theory, but I suspect I've figured it out...

So DVD-Rs are less durable and can "rot" faster therefore becomming
unplayable quicker?
