Hi all just wondering if anyone has had a fair amount of experience with both high capacity HDD+DVD recorders from these brands - reason I ask is that I have a fault with my Panasonic 200Gig unit and have been offered a Pioneer as replacement (as well as a pana if I want to stay with the same unit) - I am now wondering which might be better....... if the pioneer is vastly more intuitive and does all the same things then I would lean towards it due to others in the household wanting to record stuff .... but if it is basically as hard to use as the Pana then I will not move Hope this is at least basically clear...... thoughts? Steve I had a Panasonic DMR E50 and a DMR ES20 (and a Lite-On somethingorother). I now have a Pioneer 531H. The Pioneer is easy to use and has some nice features but the recording quality on both Panasonics was quite a bit better. Neither Panasonic had a hard and the Pioneer does but the record quality on the hard drive is barely acceptable at XP while the Panasonics were excellent on LP mode on discs (DVD-R and RAM). However, I had too many problems with the Panasonics eating discs and not doing the timer recording etc. The first one only last a little over a year (150 burned discs) and the second one started having problems while there was still time to return it. Now, since I am unhappy with the quality of the Pioneer I am considering returning it. What will I buy? About the only thing out there that is better seems to be a Panasonic with a hard drive. Well, Walmart sells 3 year extended service plans so I might just take a deep breath and get another Panny. Their plans even include wearing out the laser drive and buttons on the remotes. I bought my Panasonic DMR-E30 in April of 2003 and have burnt over 3000 DVD-R media through it. I get about 1 failure in every thousand or so. Where I am we get power failures or on the hotter days here in Perth the voltage gets low which the Panasonic does not like. The power tends to go on and off which is very bad for the recorder. I now have an UPS on my E30 so if the power starts to go then I have at least time to stop the burn and turn it off. If I was buying today I'd get the Panasonic DMR-EH60. There are digital tuner models that are coming but looking at the latest prices with digital tuners I'm seriously thinking about getting the EH60 now as I mainly record off Foxtel anyway. I sell a disc that works well in these Panasonc recorders as most of my client base use their Paansonic DMR Recorders for DVD Authoring so I have to have a disc that works well in these DVD Recorders. I have customers that have bought the other brands of recorders and all have said they prefer the Panasonics as the video quality is that much better. The Panasonics do something a lot don't do and on flexible record mode they record down to the minute which means you get the best possible picture quality for that length of video. One of the problems I had with the ES20 was that if I used FR (flexible recording) the disc would play back fine until it was finalized. Then it would either be a coaster or it would refuse to acknowledge that a program recorded on it even existed. It worked ok if I chose my record speed manually. The E50 I had did a fine job with the FR mode. I'm thinking the ES20 wasn't leaving enough room on the disc for the finalization info. I tried different brands of discs and it didn't seem to matter. |

The Panasonic DMR-ES20 hasn't made it to Australia yet. http://panasonic.com.au/products/cat...fm?objectID=55 Panasonic Australia are often 6 to 9 months or longer behind the rest of the world with releasing new recorder models. Overseas they have Panasonic recorders with digital tuners in them so if you have bought the ES20 you are probably outside Australia. I would look at the digital models assuming you are in the UK or the US. The digital models have the letter "D" at the end of the model number. EG the EH60D has a digital tuner. Worth buying if they are available from the country you are posting from. The EX models which are coming look even better and the ability to record to Dual Layer media and record in HD to the internal hard drive. I went to Panasonic's web site and the only one I could find with a hard drive was the DMR-EH50. Do you know of a site where I can compare the models? |
