Default Why do companies (like Sony etc) make dvds and games for consoles 'regioned'? - 05-04-2007 , 04:41 AM

blimy.... its pretty simple, for the most part it is about making sure
that a release stays in one geographical area, so a game released in
the US wont work in the EU. That is purely a money thing, stops
unwanted moving of content, supposed to reduce (fails at) piracy.

Secondly there is the small matter of the different signal / power
types, US uses NTSC, we in the UK uses PAL, others use vareiations of
those, such as PAL 60. games intended for NTSC systems "may" not work
correctly, however its a failing argument as most TV sets now a days
will support all formats which leaves it as a money thing.

power wise USA / JAP uses 120ish V we use 220-250, theres different
frequencies as well 50Hz and 60Hz, thats not so much a game issue more
so a console its self issue.

To control the market and prices, but I think they will go to realize
soon that is time to forget it. The problem seems to be that this
people needs centuries to move ahead from his sofas. There are region
free players and consoles around or other ways for the consumer to go
around this kind gift. I think that the comodity to buy the dvd more
near u it is the first thought for many, so I'm not sure about what
they are worring about. The possibility to buy the dvd when u are in
holiday or to receive a gift far away from your home could be an
obvious freedom - not just for business men.
