Might be worth trying CDex (freeware)

http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/features.html

Thanks all.

Cdex looks to me to be just for audio files. My file is a .dat file
that seems to be video - the little bit I can see. I should have
said that.

Have you tried IsoBuster? - it really is a very good program for recovering
files off CD's and DVD's. If the file is a .dat format it is probably an
image format file of the disc. You can get a trial version of isoBuster for
free.

Actually the free version is not just a trial but will work in
limited mode. I liked it so much I spent the money for the 'pro'
version that has many more options.

I have recovered DVD's with it, letting the program put in dummy
data for non-readable. It will give you blocks of colors when it
hits them, but better than nothing at all.

I've had instances where it ran overnight trying to recover lost
blocks, but it will keep on going where nothing else will seem
to.

I can't help you other than to suggest that if you intend to archive
important information to CD-R, then it may be wise to write as many
copies as will fit on the same disc. For example, if you have 200MB of
data, then you could back it up three times on a single 700MB disc.

I posted earlier about 'iso-buster', but I happened to think
of an additional benefit of iso-buster that I had not remember, nor
have I had occassion to use.

It will give you an option of building a file before it tries to
extract the data you are trying to recover. But it also
gives and option for failed reads of re-reading the disk in
another drive [if you have more than one on your machine] to
attempt to read the previously non-recoverable areas of the disk.

I don't know if this option is only on the supported [$29.95US]
version or is on the free version.

ISO-Buster has worked very well for me.

I also use it read from DVD-RAM disks recorded on a DVR that
while they will play on a PC you can't extract the files for
editing with any of the standard programs that I have, and IB
will read them into a .vor ?? file which I can edit
with VideoRedo.

I just thought this additional info on IB would be worthwhile.
