Default Can I copy 4 audio CDs to a DVD-R? - 05-08-2007 , 09:09 PM

I have 4 audio CDs (not music) that I would like to copy to dvd-r.
Ideally, I would like to be able to listen to the dvd on my stand
alone dvd player, but if not possible I could play it on my computer
dvd player. How would I do that, do I need to rip it first or
compress it? What would be the easiest way to do that (with the
least amount of steps). I have Nero 6. When copy from cd to cdr it
is easy to do with Nerco "copy cd" option, so it stays in the same
format. What about copying several audio cd's to a dvd, is that
only possible in mp3 format? Thanks.

Here are some options:

--- Rip some audio CDs as uncompressed WAV and burn to DVD-r as
DVD-rom ----
Rip the music CDs (CD-DA) to uncompressed WAV files in folders (most audio
ripping programmes offer you a choice in the "rip format", which most people
pick as compressed MP3). I used EAC (ExactAudioCopy) for this.
You could rip somewhere between 4 to 7 CDs (depending on number of tracks)
to WAV in different folders and then just burn them to a DVD-r as a DVD-rom
(data) format. This is only useable with your computer DVD-drive with your
favorite audio application. I like using this approach to back up my better
audio CDs.
For example, I have the Beatles complete EMI CD set (16 CDs) that I have
ripped to wav and backed up on 2 DVD-r as DVD-rom.

--- Rip some audio CDs as uncompressed WAV and add as audio tracks to a
DVD-Video cd ------
I currently use this approach, which has the advantage that the resultant
DVD-video can be played in any standard DVD player with the same audio
quality as on the original CDs (as well as your DvD-drive with typical dvd
drive sofware).
I use Nero Ultra Enhanced 7 (the Nero Vision 4 component) to create a
DVD-Video SlideShow. Nero 7 is nice because you can very easily add audio
"commentary" tracks to any number of slides.
I create a DVD Title for each album and just add a number of slides (just
jpg images of the album track listing) and then add the ripped WAV audio
tracks to each slide and select to make the slide duration equal to the
corresponding audio "commentary" track).
This way, for the Beatles set I have 2 DVD-Video slideshow disks, each
containing 8 Titles (one title per audio CD) and each track (about 14 per
Title) is a Chapter under that title.
When Nero Vision creates the DVD-Video layout before burning, it must
upsample the audio from the ripped audio CD wav files because CD audio is 16
bit/44.1 kHz but the minimum DVD-Video audio uncompressed (LPCM) format is
48 kHz which doesn't degrade the original CD audio quality. (actually
DVD-Video can support up to 24 bit/96 kHz quality stereo audio, but Nero
Vision doesn't support that quality yet).
For the main DVD-Video menu layout, I just scanned the Beatles albums
cover-art (from CD jewel-case) and used that. It works perfectly and looks
good on any standard TV and sounds fantastic (assuming you have your DVD
player connected to a good hi-fi system).

"Audio DVD Creator", is a shareware product that uses this 2nd approach:

I'm going to write a more detailed technical article soon about the
DVD-Video approach using Nero 7 that I described above.

There is a lengthy discussion of this topic in the thread in this group
dated April 20, by 'Doc'.

I can't remember how to link directly to it.

Here is a tech note on how this can be done with Nero 7:

I am not an expert like most of the people who write in here
but I have been putting pictures of flowers on discs and add
music from an audio player. I unplug the audio-in place and
plug in the audio player. Turn on the VHS tape and the audio
player at the same time and record. (You don't have to
watch the flowers). After it finalizes it will play on most
DVD players. CF
