DVD audio distortion -

Within the past week I've suddenly noticed the audio distort when the
music/sound gets loud when watching DVD's on my TV.
I have a JVC TV (about 3 years old) and a Sony single disc DVD player
( about 1 year old) hooked through the component connection. I also
hook up a pair of harmon kardon speakers through the TV headphone
jack. (There is no receiver or amplifier.)
When I first heard it I disconnected the external speakers but the
distortion on louder sounds continued through the TV so the speakers
weren't the cause. It also continues when I turn the volume down. It
does not happen when just watch TV or using the VCR, only DVD's.
I can minimize it by setting the attenuation (ATT setting) to "ON"
instead of the "off" I've always used, but it also reduces the overall
sound quality. It hapens primarily when the background music gets
powerful.
These are store-bought DVD's.
Is this a DVD player issue or something else?
Thank you-
