Default DVD audio distortion - 04-24-2007 , 01:23 PM

In the past week I've noticed a lot of audio distortion when watching
DVD's. (These are blockbuster rentals, not home recorded.) It
happens when the sound gets loud and intense, most often with the
backround music. Turning the overall volume down doesn't help. It
does not happen when watching any TV channels (digital or analog).
It's also OK when using the VCR (tapes or tuner.) Only DVD's.

My TV is a JVC which is about 3 years old and the DVD player is a Sony
single disc player (1 year old) connected using the componenet
connection. I also use a pair of harmon kardon speakers in the
headphone jack of the TV.

The first thing I did was remove the external speakers, but the
distortion continued in the TV speaker.

I can minimize the distortion by changing the attenuation on the DVD
audio menu to "ON' instead of "OFF", which is how it's always been
previously. It helps but it also reduces the overall sound quality as
well, which stinks.

Does this sound like the DVD player went bad or the TV?
(or something else?)

Thanks-
Vickie

Difficult to tell - could be a fault in the audio output stage of the
DVD player or the audio input stage of the TV. Or it could just be
that you're playing 'louder' discs than you have before and the level
out of the DVD player is too high for the TV's input amplifiers to
cope with.

I wouldn't have thought that turning on the attenuator should have
caused a reduction in sound quality, only volume level.

It's sounds [no pun intended] like the DVD is putting out a level
higher than the next stage expects and thus overloads it.

And she did mention hooking up to a headphone output. That will
typically have a higher level than a line-out.

To get good sound through a system you have to be careful at all
stages - as having any single stage input to high will cause
distortion. [I spend a lifetime - it seemed like - as a recording
engineer - after working broadccast for years].
