I have been using smartRipper to save some of my dvds to HD. However
they seem to be ripped without a AUTDIO_TS or VIDEO_TS structure.
Even though I tried to create one my self, and also later moved the
*.vob and *.IFO files to that directory, Windows media center wouldnt
recongnize that folder as DVD. I though bup files were backup files?
are they necessary? What can I do so that I can view the ripped folder
as DVD now?

..BUP files are indeed just the backups of the .IFO files, and are not
required to play a DVD.

Most PC software likes to read the DVD's files from a VIDEO_TS folder and
will complain or fail if the DVD files are in a folder named something
else, most or even all (??) don't care about the AUDIO_TS folder which, I
think, exists for backwards compatibility and is always empty anyway. I
can't imagine your typo of 'AUTDIO_TS' would have made any difference even
if that's what you'd created as a directory instead of the more likely
truth being that the typo was just in your post to this group.

So why won't the DVD in your VIDEO_TS folder play?

Firstly, why didn't smartRipper rip the .BUP files as well as the .VOB and
..IFO files? This seems strange! Maybe it didn't rip the whole DVD and it
is the lack of an .IFO file or .VOB file that is actually causing the
failure to play.

You could get a copy of VLC which is a free media player that can handle
playing DVDs, and try playing with that.

However, I'd forget about smartripper and use --the universally
acknowledged-- best DVD ripper, DVD Decrypter (also free).

When I rip a DVD, I create a directory of the movie's name, say, 'Casino
Royale', and a subdir of that, 'VIDEO_TS', point DVD Decrypter to the
VIDEO_TS dir and rip straight into it.

Have another go ripping, this time with DVD Decrypter, and get back to me
if there are more problems, but try a different DVD first to see if that
works.

I used to uses dvd decrypter but for some reason it appears that smart
ripper is able to rip more DVD's than DVDdecrypter. I will use DVD
decrypter first now, but when that doesnt work smart Ripper is a
backup that works (even though I am not sure why it just doesnt rip
them as a complete HD readable DVD)
