Default K7S5A Processor options... - 11-27-2003 , 03:45 AM

I have a K7S5A ver 3.0. I was wondering what the fastest CPU is that will
fit without having to
modify the motherboard. Am I right in htinking it would be the thoroughbred
XP 2400?

Yes. Or a 266 Mhz Thorobred 2600 if you can find one.

Rich,

I ordered an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (266 FSB), and it just arrived late
this afternoon. It's an OEM, not retail package. I examined the OPN
("Ordering Part Number") on the processor with a magnifying glass to
make sure it is the correct AMD processor and correct 2600+ processor
with the 266 FSB. (The 2600+ with the 333 FSB is not the correct one
for the ECS K7S5A motherboard).
The OPN on the my new 2600+ processor is: AXDA2600DKV3C

This number matches up to the one on the AMD website for the 2600+ with
the 266 FSB.

This particular processor is a Model 8 "Thoroughbred"
2600+ 2133MHz 16x 1.65V 85º C 266MHz L2 Cache 256KB

The OEM package number is: 86-029-2600

The Retail package is: 86-029-2601

The website seller that I bought it from charged me $107 plus $7.95 for
FedEx ground shipping. (This same processor when it came out the end of
August 2002, was priced at about $300).

Next, I will buy a good heat sink and HSF for this processor; still
looking and trying to decide which one to get. The 2600+ will replace
my 2100+ Athlon XP (266 FSB). The 2100+ has worked flawlessly. I know
I won't realize that much of a speed improvement on most applications,
but it's just another little tweak to my ECS K7S5A 3.1 (not the Pro
model), that will not be overclocked. I bought this 2600+ processor
because they are getting almost impossible to find, and this is the
fastest AMD processor that my K7S5A will take. I'm hoping to have the
same flawless operation with the 2600+ as I have had with my 2100+
processor. But then there is Murphy's Law, and the old adage, "If it
ain't broke, don't fix it!" I will wear a static wrist strap when
installing the new chip, and cross my fingers and hold my breath when I
fire up the new one. I will let you know the outcome.

I know it's probably too late, but I just built a system for a bud and
used one of the new Coolermaster Aero HSFs, the one with the squirrel
cage fan, and it is a very nice unit. It came with a speed control
pot so you can crank down the speed to reduce noise, or you can run it
full speed for really good cooling. Also, the Aero came with a nifty
adapter to mount the speed control pot on the front side of the puter
in a 3.5" drive bay (tho with the Antec 835 case, the drive bay
adapter would not work due to front panel depth design).

Frank,

I'm still looking and trying to decide which CPU Cooler to buy
and
install on the new Athlon XP 2600+ (266 FSB) processor. I want to
get
one that keeps the temperature down, but doesn't have a fan that is
loud. What HSF do you have on your 2600+ processor?

Bought that same (AXDA2600DKV3C) XP 2600+ 266MHz part from
newegg.com at
the end of October and can confirm it works fine on my old Ver.1.X
K7S5A
using the OC 021209b bios from:
http://pub140.ezboard.com/bk7s5amotherboardforum

NewEgg only offered the 266MHz version for a few hours and I was
glad to
get one from a reputable source and the $99.00 price with free
shipping
was right.

If you have the proper bios version you shouldn't have any
problems.
Don't think the 266MHz part was ever out there as a retail
package, only
as a OEM part.
As has been metioned before, pricewatch.com has a few vendors
selling them.
Checking them out via: http://www.resellerratings.com/
would be wise.
