Default K7SOM+ motherboard won't upgrade bios - 04-05-2006 , 09:24 AM

when my computer boots up, it writes clearly that flash write protection
is enabled... i dont know where is the jumper, and i have all the files
required on a system bootable win98 disk with two files, one of them is
the flash utility, the other is .rom, i am sure

i write the command 'A:\>"flash utility name (i dont remeber)".exe
"(name of rom file, something like E080607F)".rom' end press
enter, it will start the utility flash program, but it will hang, the
computer stops responding....... help pls

Hi roise r

Which version of the K7SOM+ do you have there ? There are multiple
different versions of the K7SOM+, and if you flash the wrong BIOS onto
your board, it could be Dead.

hello rajguru, thank you for replying, even now 5 days later i am still
struggling with that issue... i now this will sound noobish, but i dont
know exactly how to check which model is my motherboard, i'm aware that
there are 4-5 diferent K7SOM+... i tried EVEREST, tried looking at the
motherboard it self, but it says no more then just K7SOM+ )), i
suspect that it is a 5.2A, becouse it has 4 RAM slots, 2by2 grouped,
and that is the picture shown for the 5.2A model, ...the other models
have only two memory slots...

i tried all the jumpers combinations and no one is the write protection
jumper... still gives me the message in the post-boot screen : "Flash
Write Protected" just after the memory scan... i am replying from
another computer right now, so i cannot write the exact order of the
messages, but if it is important i will give them to you tomorrow when
i get to work...

i am quite sure that the .rom file from where i am trying to upgrade,
is the right one becouse before flashing begins, it will write clearly
that the file version matches the motherboard...

thanks again rajguru for paying me attention...

hi Rajguru, here is some updated info:

1.the boot screen,- everything:
Quote:
AMIBIOS
K7SOM+ Release 10/29/2002 S (i dont know for what the "S" stand
for though)

AMDAthlon(tm) Processor,1100MHz
Checking NVRAM..
Flash Write Protection
524288KB OK

here is the motherboard string i think:

(C) American Megatrends Inc.,
62-1029-001131-00101111-040201-SiS740-K7SOM+- (the numbers that
are located at the bottom of the boot screen)

2.i found out that my K7SOM+ is actualy a 5.1 version, as i read it
clearly on the top left corner (front side) of the motherboard it self,
just above the keyboard plug...

...so now the question remains how to disable the "Flash Write
Protection" thingie... so i can finally upgrade ...
i am ashamed to admit that actualy i did try to upgrade with the 5.2A's
bios upgrade version, which after that hanged, but the computer WORKS
perfectly after restart, and the old bios still remains undamaged...
(note that the "flash protection" message is not jumper related as i
already recalled that this post message began to show, after i tried to
upgrade with the wrong .rom.........'''''and still i dont understand,
why did it tell me through the upgrade process that the 5.2A .rom file
was the right version...if it was actualy 'WRONG'?

Look through your bios for virus protect or flash protection line and
disable it.
