KT600A and IDE miniport -

I have a KT600-A with an AMD2500XP, Seagate 80GB (ST380021A) IDE and Western
Digital 160GB as Primary master/slave with Windows 2000 and all updated
drivers (4in1 4.51). Programs seemed to take a little longer than expected
to load (I've another ST380021A on a 1.2GHz TB), so I ran a couple of
benchmarks (Performance Test and HDTach). They showed the performance of the
two drives was quite different with the Seagate being quite a bit slower.
So I checked into installing the VIA miniport driver, which is supposed to
enhance performance and stability. The system went into an endless loop
during the boot process, and nothing I did was able to recover. I ended up
having to do a complete reinstall (which was okay since this was a new
system and had nothing critical on it). The second time around I tried the
older drivers that came with the board - same result. I've since learned
that the miniport driver is a real hit or miss thing.
Any idea what could be going on?
