Default Laptop Help - 11-09-2006 , 04:22 PM

Ok so here is the deal. My screen for my laptop recently cracked and I
can no longer use it. What I am currently doing is using a monitor that
is hooked up to my laptop but I would really like to get it fixed. How
would I go about doing this? The laptop works I just need a new screen
for it? Is there anyway I can buy this part of the laptop or no? I have
no idea about computers at all and I was wondering if anyone could help
me. Thanks.

You will need to find the spare part number for the display panel in
order to replace it. This may be written on the part itself or you
might need to go through the manufacturer to see if you can get it.
Display panels are specific to individual laptops, so you'll need to
get the exact part number. From there, you can either see about
getting the part direct from the manufacturer or you can toss the
spare part number into Google and see if a 3rd party store has any for
sale.

Note: replacement display panels for laptops tend to be rather pricy,
especially if you get a new panels (as opposed to a refurbished one).
It's not abnormal for a replacement display panel to be worth more
than the laptop itself. They are also rather non-trivial to replace,
normally it's only recommended that trained technicians replace this
part.

So...Who built the laptop? Are they still in business? If so, unless your
laptop is ancient, you should be able to contact the manufacturer's repair
service...

If not, a replacement laptop or a carcass that can be slavaged may
be available in eBay. It's likely not worth the bother/risk
though.

Especially for someone who has "no idea about computers at all".

Had a similar thing happen a few years ago and the cost of replacing the
screen was about the same as the cost of a complete barebones version of
the same system. I bought the new barebones system and transferred the
modem, HDD etc. over to the new system to bring it up to spec with the
original. If yours is old that may not be an option of course.

Tip: store your laptop upside down, especially in airline overheads.

You can get it fixed there, or order the parts from them, or at least
read about what it takes and if you are up to the task of DIY.
