Default Sempron 64bit overclock? - 05-19-2006 , 06:05 PM

Hello:

I'm thinking of buying a Sempron 64bit 2800+. The motherboard I'll be
buying for it is the ASUS K8V-X SE. What kind of overclock can I expect
with this setup? I'm only familiar with overclocking AMD XP type CPUs.
What settings should I use?

Also, I'll be using a Thermalright SI-97A HS with a SilenX 92mm fan.

TIA

P.S. I'll be using DDR400 Crucial memory.

Get a different MB. That board uses the original via k8t800 chipset which
will limit you're overclocking capabilities. Get a board with the nforce
3-250 chipset. An ECS Nforce3-A board will work quite well and allow a
clock of at least 250MHz, or 8x250 for 2000MHz. If you want more than
that, you'll have to make sure the clock on the board you get can be
raised higher. The CPU is probably capable of 2400-2700MHz, but with only
a locked 8 multipler, well, you can do the math.

Way too much overkill. A TR2-M6 would work fine as would the stock cooler.
These chips run a lot cooler than the K7 (XP) line of cpu's

Thanks for the info. I prefer not to get an ECS board...once bitten. Now
I'm looking at an ASUS K8N MB. Could you direct me to a website which
explains to me how to overclock. It seems that there is quite a difference
between overclocking a socket 754 and a socket A processor.

The K8N is an excellent board also. But there's nothing wrong with ECS
boards either. As for overclocking, it's the same as socket A or any
other CPU. Multiplier times FSB equals cpu clockspeed. the only extra
thing you have to deal with is the HT link speed. You'll need to keep it
at or below 1000MHz. it should befault to 800MHz with a 4x multiplier. If
you raise the FSB clock above 250Mhz lower the HT multiplier to 3x.

Got it.

However, I've been reading about people getting a FSB of over 300Mhz!? How
is this possible? The following is one example of what I mean:
"Got to 2.56Ghz with 3x HTT, 320FSB"
From the manual of the K8N motherboard, it reads that FSB can only be set
between 200 - 300.

I'm also considering getting a 3100+ instead of the 2800+. Since the
multilier is 9 instead of 8, will that allow for a better overclock?

Perhaps later bioses allowed for higher speeds. Really don't know. maybe
modded bios.

It'll allow for a higher overclock considering the same bus clock. 8x300
vs. 9x300. You also need to take ram speed into account, but the bios
settings should be able to keep it at or below 400DDR.

I did finally find some motherboards which do support 400FSB but they seem
to be PCI-E based boards. Since I've just upgraded to an ATI AIW 9600XT, I
think I'll go ahead and buy the ASUS K8N. I was also considering the K8N-E
Deluxe...but I don't have a need for 1394, 8ch audio or Sata Raid.

So, I'll be getting a 3100+ 64bit and the ASUS K8N board.

Many Thanks.
Chris.
