Default Overclocking Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ - 01-02-2006 , 04:10 PM

Considering buying one of these....what is the overclocking potential of
this cpu and what core does it use....? My current system is detailed
below:

Athlon 64 4000+ Clawhammer 10x260 HTT 4 x 260
2 x 512mb G.Skill PC4400 2.5-4-4-8 1T
MSI MS-7100 Sli
ATI XT1800XT (PE BIOS) 512mb DDR3 GPU 700mhz / DDR 800x2
Win XP Pro SP2

Thanks all and HNYear!

same potential as the rest of the X2s, which is usually anywhere between
2.5-2.7GHz with air cooling, there's no set number. you might get lucky
and go stable higher but temps will get up there and you'd probably need
a better cooling solution.

it also depends on your motherboard... which is...?

the core, well it ships in different versions that have different
stepping, don't ask me which is best for OCing 'cause i have no clue. it
uses a 110W toledo core (i'm getting the 4200+ which is manchester, only
89W, less power = less heat). before paying extra for the cache make
sure your apps will actually use it, some games will have a small
performance advantage with cache, but thats about it.

I have a 4200+, so far I've only tried a 200MHz OC (218x11) at it's
default vcore of 1.35V, running two copies of Prime95 (1 per core) for
about 4 hours the cpu hit 54C using the stock heatpipe heatsink, no
errors. I've never had an AMD chip OC 200MHz without having to raise the
vcore and this is like my 14th AMD chip in last 10 years.
cool - anything under 55C load is good. take it to 2.6, you know you
want to will your ram do it at 1:1...?

i'll have the thermalright SI-120 so hopefully i'll have an edge with
cooling... but probably not by much, i want to stay on air and 2.6 would
be just awesome... i guess i would be happy with 2.5 though :/

I was able to get (my Winnie) up to 2.4 and still have the power now thing
working, fully adjustable, so that it runs at 1.2 at 1.2v most of the time.
If anyone's interested I'll describe it. I haven't tested to see how low I
can get the voltage at 1.2, but it do p95 overnight at all 3 speeds that it
uses.

Right now I have 4 sticks in it,
2x512 Crucial Ballistix PC4000
2x256 Corsair XMS PC3200
If I go past 218 I'd probably have to either lower the ram speed to 333
or take out the Corsair sticks.

I'd like to try 2.6GHz, I just haven't found time to play and test it
yet, and I'm not even sure what the A8N-E can do out of the box.

I just started looking at heatsinks, I may get the Thermaltake CL-P0114
(120mm Cooling Fan, 6 Heatpipes), supposed to install on Asus A8N's
without having to remove the board out of the case, I really don't feel
like re-building it, I already built/re-built 5 PCs last month, sort of
tired of doing that!

Kimmy
GIMP listed my hardware in first post ehich you must have cut here it is
again..

2 x 512mb G.Skill PC4400 2.5-4-4-8 1T
MSI MS-7100 Sli motherboard

Donchya just hate c**ts who don't state the gross overclock, ie - 2.38 GHz ?

at it's

I'm using thermal fans with sensors on the video card so my case only
has really good air flow when gaming,so I may have to change that, but
the CPU only peeks at about 45C during games.

Does anyone know the average OC for the Asus A8N-E?
Thanks,
Kimmy

Flunk math?
Nope.
But it's just a bit c**tish to expect people to do the arithmetic (mental or
otherwise) because one is too much of a dork to state it oneself.

well lets see- below is my system:

Athlon 64 4000+ Clawhammer 10x260 HTT 4 x 260
2 x 512mb G.Skill PC4400 2.5-4-4-8 1T

Win XP Pro SP2

CPU is 2600mhz @ 1.55 v idle temp 35c load 45-50c and stable

Sorry, LOL, but I already said it was a 200MHz OC, and I don't really
see the point in the CPU MHz, all that really matters is what you can
OC it over the defaults.
What good is stating the o/c, if you don't state the default ?

AMD Athlon 64-X2 4200+
200 x 11 = 2200 (default CPU setting)
218 x 11 = 2398 (1st overclocking try @ 1.35V)

peace,
kimmy
