Default upgrade P4 530 to ? - 06-24-2006 , 05:18 PM

Hi

I have an HP Media center with a Intel P4 530.
I did overclock it but now I want to change CPU
What CPU can I put in there ?
Can I put for exemple a P4 660 ?
Or a D 950 ?

Thanks in advance for the advice

d

Don't know specifically...but you would have to find out what motherboard
your PC has and what chipset its using...then see what the BIOS of
motherboard
supports by visiting HP's website or by trial and error. Else you can try
asking this question at comp.sys.hp.hardware...somebody
there might know off the bat.

I doubt the motherboard your HP came with will support a Pentium D
series...but maybe.

At the very least, you have to give us some hints.

What is the exact model number of the HP computer ?

Does the motherboard of the computer have an identifying
part number or name printed on it in white letters ?
Many HP motherboards will be manufactured as an OEM
board by a well-known motherboard manufacturer.

Information like that, would make it easier to search
for the answer on www.hp.com .

In the normal world the I-915 chipset supports the Intel 6xx processors. In
the HP world there is really no way to be sure without contacting them. I
don't think that model is sold by Asus to the general public and there is no
reference to it on the Asus site that I could find anywhere. If I were you I
would contact HP Customer Support and see if they can tell you anything. I
wish I could be of more help.

There is a BIOS update dated 10/2005, which _may_ be sufficient for a 6xx
series processor. The presence of microcode is necessary but not sufficient
to guarantee success.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...tem=pv-28134-6

I downloaded the sp26646.exe BIOS update. When I double click
on it, there is a temporary directory created on my C drive.
In there, is a 512KB file "0315.ROM", which is the BIOS update.
Using "mmtool.exe", I extracted the microcode module from the
BIOS. (In other words, I don't need an HP motherboard, to
examine the BIOS update file.)

A 631 processor (stepping B1) is 0F62. (Microcode not in BIOS)

A 631 processor (stepping C1) is 0F64 (Microcode not in BIOS)

A 630 processor (stepping N0) is 0F43

A 670 processor (stepping R0) is 0F4A (Microcode not in BIOS)
http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL8PY

So, there is a partial chance that an early version of 6x0
processor will work. Likely the N0 stepping, if that is
still sold at retail.

You can find 500 and 600 series processors under the Pentium4
section of this page, and look up more different models:

Does the computer enclosure have enough cooling for a higher
power processor ? That is probably the reason that HP does not
want you to use a faster processor. If you have a 3GHz processor
already, and have overclocked it, a new processor is not going
to offer too much performance improvement.

Thanks Paul,

I'll try that tonight.
I could not overclock much (3 --> 3.2)
The enclosure has good cooling.

This is a new topic, but much of the information in it is pertinent to
my problem. I just recently purchased a Debranded version of the HP
552Z, and I can not get the CPU to boot up. Nothing shows up on the
monitor

I was wondering if when they Debranded, would they have wiped the BIOS
and if so how can I get a BIOS installed

I know that they wiped the HD, so I am wondering what first step
should I take to get this to a bootable computer
