Default X800XT PE and Zalman VGA Cooler - 01-23-2006 , 10:35 AM

Hi there. I've been trying to over clock my Asus X800 XT PE up to X850
speeds (540/590) but ATI Tool reports artifacts at only a few MHz above
stock (520/560(I think)). If I fit a Zalman VGA cooler, with it's RAM
heatsinks, do you think I can get better OCs? I'm not sure because heat
doesn't seem to be a huge problem on overclock (idling at 45C, up to
85C at load). Just the odd yellow artifact on my fuzzy 3D cube.

But I'd love it if anybody had any similar experiences and found
upgrading the HSF made a difference to their overclocks.

I've got one intake fan and two exhaust fans in my case, cabling is
fairly tidy.

TIA,

Bossk

85C?? I think that's quite much! I'm hoping to get my hands on one of those
cards... I've still got my Swiftech watercooling block, i'd love to see if
that helps any overclocking...

So do I! My X800Pro flashed to XT runs at 500/550 and peaks at about 59C
when pushed hard. I have a dual pipe Zalman cooler with two fans on it
though, which probably helps a little :-).

Even then, I still can't push the memory timings much higher without
problems starting to appear.

85c is way too hot!!
I got the x800 GTO with 16pipes flashed and the Arctic Cooling AT5 ati
cooler.

I hit 564/573 stable and only go to about 60-62 under full load 35-37 idle.
You can,(as I did) also adjust the fan speed profile. Adjust the ramp so
that it's quite at idle, 50% or so, but as soon as it's above 55c it goes to
100% speed.
with this I have a 3dmark05 score above 7000 with an AMD 3200 venice clocked
at 2500mhz.

cpu overclock makes VERY little difference, oc the video card got me from
4600 to over 7k!!

monitor your temps under load for 5 min, then open your case and see if you
get a significant drop. If so, you need more case fans also. A top 'blow
hole' maybe or a side input blowing strait to the card.

I did always think 80 was a bit high, but I did a bit of web searching
and found that to be fairly standard (
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...g/voltmods/101 ). If you
lot have X850s (or X800 GTOs) then perhaps teh upgraded core does run
cooler. OTOH if ASUS cards do run a bit hot, then a Zalman cooler is
the way to go. Any extra juice I get out will be a bonus- I'm now a bit
worried my card will burn itself out, I doubt I'll upgrade within a
year! Thanks all for your advice.

I bought the all copper Zalman (VF700-Cu I think) and fitted it ok- it
took me about an hour as I was desperate to avoid buggering the card,
the original HS was screwed in tight but had at least a mil. of thermal
paste- lovely. It now idles at 34C and tops out at about 60C. Still
warm, but about as good as I can get I think. I also found other X800
XT PE owners had hot cards at www.techpowerup.com so I suppose this is
normal. Anyway, it now runs stably at X850 XT PE speeds, which is good.
Haven't tried any further up.

Does anybody have any advice as to whether they prefer ATI Tray Tools
or ATITool?

I've gotten an X800Pro now, lasercut, unfortunately. With my watercooling it
tops out at 39°C, at 550 MHz core. Mem wont go far beyond 475 :-(
