ooh, I didn't "write from an ISO file", just copied it. I'll try & do
it right this time.

It handles ISO and the file extension on DVD is .ISO.
Can you view a bunch of files on it in XP, or just one large file?
I don't know, I'll look. What should it be?

Vista comes on a DVD, requiring a bootable DVD drive. How is that done
for a new build? If I install a DVD drive, say Lite-On or LG, and set
bios to boot from CD-ROM drive, will it be able to read and boot from
the DVD that VISTA is on?

Yes. The procedure is identical as that used for a CD-ROM. Even
the technical details are identical to quite a low level so there
are no exceptions waiting to catch you out.

I haven't played with Vista yet. The disks are lying around but
I'll leave someone else to do Microsoft's beta testing ;-). However
I'd expect there still to be a option to create a set of boot
floppies from the DVD in any case - these have been invaluable to
me in the past with SCSI systems that didn't support CD booting.

Thanks. I asked because I have a copy of Vista Release Candidate 1 on
a DVD. I put it in a new build, but just get errors about unable to
boot from it. So I put in a copy of XP, it installed ok.(can't
activate it cause it's already on my main comp)
Vista Release Candidate 2 is out, but closed now.
I guess I'll have to wait and buy a real copy.

Ahh, much better using "write from ISO".
( but on installing Vista rc1, I get an error: autorun.dll error.
Googling on it, it's a big bug. gotta try a few things)

Looks like one big file with a .iso extension. Not right?
No. What you've done is just burn the a copy of the image file to a
DVD. What you should have done is "Burn Image" under the Recorder menu
in Nero which would have asked you to select a .nrg, .iso or .cue file.
