Default Wide Screen help from Windows guru needed. - 05-11-2007 , 10:03 AM

While I am on here...

If I sound stupid as pertains to Windows, assume that I am, since I
haven't used that OS for real in years. Here is the problem...

I use an AMD64 Shuttle for my main machine and the OS is Debian Linux.
But, being a dedicated strategy gamer of Civ II and IV, I also have an
AMD64 IceCube next to it, but this has XP. Both have high end Nvidia
video cards and they both share the same monitor.

I found a 22 inch Westinghouse LCM-22w2 wide screen monitor at Best Buy at
a price that had to be a mistake - either that or nobody wants them.
But it has a somewhat strange native resolution of 1680 x 1050. With
Linux that is no problem - you just bring up the X.org file and change it
to what you want. And once up, it looks and works great - went back to
get another one (at that price) but they were out.

Now on to Windows. There is no resolution of 1680 x 1050 in the canned
list. And I don't know what to edit, if possible, to get that resolution
in the list. Then a little surfing brought up the need for a disk with an
..inf file. Looked in the box, under all the packing - no diskette. Went
to their web site and searched - no downloadable .inf files.

Back to Best Buy - asked to look in the box of a Westinghouse monitor
(19 inch) to see if it came with a diskette. No.

So, Windows Gurus - can you give me some insight as to what I need to do?
I can download any needed stuff on my Linux machine, but the solution CAN
NOT be to put the Windows machine on line in any way. It has an original,
almost day 1, XP Pro (legal) with SP1 and NO security patches and NO
antivirus software. It never sees the 'Net for obvious reasons. In fact,
just to be absolutely safe in moments of forgetfulness, I disabled the
ethernet adapter in the bios.

Thanks all.
James White

Ok, you can try this, but no gauranties.

BTW Westinghouse monitors don't come with any software at all, not even a
monitor driver. It gets installed as a plain and simple P&P monitor.

Right-click somewhere on the desktop and select 'properties'
choose the 'settings' tab
Click on 'Advanced'
Click on 'Monitor' tab.
Notice the check box for 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot display'
Clear the checkbox
Click OK
Click on the 'Adapter' tab
Click on the button for 'List All Modes'

Ah so!! I see that 'hide...' box on my machine at work. Never noticed it
before. Will try it when I get home.

Thanks

Hmmm. Bit of a problem. The Show Hidden modes box is grayed out on my
home machine and unclickable.

Just plug it in. Windows will read the info from the monitor and allow
you to set the resolution.

Sorry, but it didn't. It came up as a generic monitor in a horrible low
res vga mode.

And then you go into the Display properties and up the resolution in
there.
As I explained, the native resolution of my monitor of 1620 x 1024 is not
in the list.

I wonder whether the custom configuration that you created for Linux
could be incorporated into the INF file for your graphics card. Note
that you will need to reinstall the graphics driver after doing this,
or you could edit the corresponding registry entry.

FWIW, the following is an excerpt from the INF file for my Diamond
Stealth card. I notice that it lists 1920 x 1200 (= 16:10) but not
1680 x 1050.

HKR,"MODES\16\640,480" ,,,"60,72,75,85,100,160,200"
HKR,"MODES\16\720,480" ,,,"75"
HKR,"MODES\16\720,576" ,,,"75"
HKR,"MODES\16\800,600" ,,,"60,72,75,85,160"
HKR,"MODES\16\1024,768" ,,,"60,70,75,85,130"
HKR,"MODES\16\1152,864" ,,,"60,70,75,85,100"
HKR,"MODES\16\1280,1024" ,,,"60,70,75,85,100"
HKR,"MODES\16\1600,1200" ,,,"60,75,85"
HKR,"MODES\16\1920,1080" ,,,"60,75,85"
HKR,"MODES\16\1920,1200" ,,,"60"
HKR,"MODES\16\1920,1440" ,,,"60"

In Windows 98, this appears to be the relevant registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Display\000n\MODES

The INF files are located in the Windows\Inf or Windows\Inf\Other
directories.

You might want to try PowerStrip 3.7:
http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm

"A simple menu that pops up from the system tray provides access to
some 500 controls over your display hardware, including sophisticated
color correction tools, period level adjustments over screen geometry,
and driver independent clock controls. A powerful application profiler
can detect when programs are launched and respond by activating
specific display settings, gamma adjustments, performance switches and
even clock speeds - returning everything to normal when the program
closes."
