It's because the monitors that came with the S series,
or one of those black ones, had a non-standard
connector. Don't know what Aptivas we're talking
about here : ).

I don't know why folks think there will be a problem with the
speakers. They just plug intro the sound card like any other speaker.
The only difference is they take power from the monitor and not a wall
wart.
The only problem you might have is some settings may not work. You may
be playing with refresh rates and such. That is more a function of the
defaults on your video card than anything else.

I purchased my Aptiva 2142 S35 back in 1998.
The system monitor was/is MM75.
Can you tell me if that monitor could work with any new desktop
computer, other than Aptiva (and other than IBM computer)?

Thanks

parlando in inglese potrei dire castronate infinite..
http://wymette.home.att.net/hardware/mm5575.html
(Vecchia ) Tanya......:-)

Not true.
The Aptiva monitors use a funky sound connector which, to my knowledge, will
not plug into anything besides an Aptiva motherboard.
Of course, improvisations are possible if one knows the pinout schemes ect.
I eventually got on-board sound to work in windows 98 with my old 2140 [which
I gave to my daughter last year] by rummaging through the utility CD and
installing the drivers from that.
