Default Help with PCI Graphics Card Upgrade - 03-03-2007 , 12:49 AM

I post a little while ago about upgrading the graphics card on my old
Aptiva 2170 to a ATI Rage 128 Pro (from the current SiS 530 onboard
card). I've been gone, but I've finally got around to putting it in.
The problem is that it's not working. Why make it easy, right?

Quote:
From what I read the SiS 530 onboard card is supposed to disable
itself when a PCI card is plugged in, but I don't think it's doing it.
There's no way to disable it in bios as far as I can tell (video
settings are auto and onboard) and there's no jumper settings for
video on the motherboard (Acer v75m). I've uninstalled the SiS drivers
(in safe mode) and set the display driver to Standard VGA.

When I put the card in the PCI slot and plug the monitor into the card
I get nothing on the monitor. It's just blank. The monitor is on
(light is green) and it recognizes that it's plugged in, but nothing
shows up on it. The computer turns on and everything, but nothing
shows on the screen. Even if I plug the monitor back into the onboard
video plug, nothing will show as long as the PCI card is in. I've
tried it in all three PCI slots.

Is this card just not going to work?

I know my old 2160 has the bias option to use either on-board video or PCI,
and also motherboard jumpers.
Maybe you should try just disabling the SiS instead of uninstalling them.

Switch to standard VGA adapter, disable SiS, reboot.
Shut down, install new card which should be detected on startup, guide it to
the drivers, reboot, viola !

As far as I can tell there is no way for me to disable it. The only
options in the bios are Auto and Onboard. Maybe the updated bios has
that option? Does anyone know? Also, there's no video jumper on the
board. I've looked and the Lenova support site confirms it (see:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...E-3Q8JAJ.html).

According to the Lenova site, it's supposed to disable itself when it
senses a new card. I'm not sure if it's doing that. I'm not sure what
it's doing. When I put the card and hook up the monitor to it I just
get a black screen. The computer beeps one time, stays on, and nothing
shows on the monitor. If I reattach the monitor to the built in card
the screen stays black (as long as the new card is in). I have to take
the new card out and reboot to get anything.

Well, have you tried my advice yet ?
