Default Problem PCI modem, IBM APTIVA - 02-21-2005 , 04:09 AM

Bonjour

ROUGHLY TRANSLATED
Hello

On an aptiva 2170, windows XP, I do not arrive to use a modem PCI Smartlink.

The modem well recognized but there always is a harbor probleme COM.

Some the is laid that I use, it is said me that the harbor is used by a peripheral other

While it there has not anything else.

Y'a-t-il an incompatibility between the percent and the modem? Y'a-t-il something of particuler to configure?

Thank-you of your assistance
Tiscali,

What other device is listed on that COM port? Can you remove that
device in Device Manager? Do you have a different COM port that you can
use? We should be able to get it to work.

Hopefully you will understand this. I will use a free translation
program to add it in French.

Mike

Thank you for your answer

My problem is that nothing is listed.
I only have the message that other program uses the com port.
I tested every com ports and I have the same problem.

Is there something to see what kind of device uses com port ?

Thank you for your help

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I do not know of anything
that would tell you what is using the COM ports. Usually, modems use
those ports. What do you have listed in the Device Manager? I'll keep
trying to find something.

Doesn't the mouse use 1 of the COM ports?

Tanya,

Yes, the mouse does use one of the COM ports. Printers and Network
cards also use the COM ports.

obs,

That's how it was explained to me at one time. Is that information
incorrect?

Well, I don't know all the details but no, those
don't really use a conventional COM port (eg.
COM1, COM2, etc).

A oldstyle serial mouse would but technically,
it is the serial port that uses the COM port.
A PS/2 mouse does not.

I guess a parallel printer uses a com port but
those are "special" and are listed as LPT ports.

Usually, the COM ports are used by serial ports,
modem, and perhaps telephony/fax software.
Just take a look in your device manager under
Ports (COM & LPT).
