Default PSU dead - perhaps? - 02-18-2004 , 05:16 PM

Hi there.

I have an Aptiva 2178-850 that has been quite unstable whenever the power
has been taken from it (unplugged from the power-outlet).

After a such removal of the power, the PC would some time have to wait for
af few minutes before it would boot.

Now it won't boot at all, but I am not sure what the reason is. I would
guess the PSU was the most obvious candidate, but how will I know if that
is the right asumption? Perhaps its the push-button, or perhaps something
on the Motherboard.

I tryed to remove the PSU from the moterboard, and added power. This gave
absolutely no result. Would the PSU not normally start up, when power is
applied to it?

Any help would be much appriciated.

Hi,
Could be the psu however I'd start with the lithium battery (i.e. replace it)

When you start it, does anything happen? or is it totally dead? (are there any
beeps? / post?)
does the hd light come on?
do the kBoard leds flash?

I don't underStand this part... are the cables (mains from the psu to the
board) SECURELY attached to the board?

Do you have another (working) psu to try?

If not, and you have a voltmeter you can test the psu --
but before all that, I'd try a new battery first as above...

Well, it turned out that I had a 4 year insurance, that was still
applicable, so I call the insturance-company, and a technichian came and
installed a new powersupply. So that was the problem (and solution)

I did try to monitor the lithium battery, which seem to be working fine
- 3 volts.

Anyway, problem solved. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.
