Default Replace hard drive - 04-14-2007 , 09:33 AM

I have an IBM 2139 E5D. I would like to put in a larger hard drive. Can
anyone tell me the correct kind to look for? I see it can be no larger than
127mb.
I am also unsure if there is a space for it. I added a cd burner sometime
ago.

Thanks

Look for an IDE drive. Also, take a look inside your case and make sure
you have the connections (power and cable) available for another drive.
You should have them though. As far as space, while you have the case
open, look to see if you have any empty bays. If not, I have heard of
people putting hard drives in without having the open bay. Just fasten
it down where it will get plenty of air circulation so that it doesn't
heat up too much. The other option would be to remove one of your
drives, replace the existing hard drive, or buying an external hard
drive. As far as brands, I prefer Western Digital and Maxtor. Never
have had a problem with either.

Just don't buy an IBM Deskstar... I've had four fail in five years
although now I think Hitachi bought the Deskstar line so they *may*
have improved but I wouldn't count on it.
It was only that one line of Deskstars that were
a problem.

BTW, Hitachi recently announced the first HDD
to crack the terabyte barrier. $400USD.
That's not bad, considering that my first HDD
upgrade cost $400CAD and was only 4GB.

BTW2, If you're running XP, I'm not sure if it relies
on the BIOS recognizing your HDD like DOS does.
You *might* be able to install something bigger
than 127GB. Maybe someone can comment on
this.

Space shouldn't be an issue, you can put a HD just about anywhere - The real
issue is the ribbon, if its tied into another device, like most hd's are, it
has to be close enough for the funky ribbon setup.
Some ribbons have the secondary connection real close to the first' leaving
you few options [obviously, this is designed for hd's mounted in tandem].
Others have it more in the middle, allowing you some slack.
If it is the only device on the ribbon, your set. Put it anywhere, so long as
its not going to contact anything else.

I've had western digitals die on me, and maxadors - So my advice would be to
get one of those, and do frequent back-ups.

I believe the BIOS extensions they ship with these drives in the full
retail box (MaxBlast or EZ Bios) will get you by any hardware
limitations. I had a 250g running on my 2144 Aptiva for a while.

Oh yeah, forgot about those, but it's probably better
to avoid using those.

I had a couple of 30GBs running in my 2176 (8.4GB limit)
under 98SE, by FDISKing the drives in another
computer that fully recognized the drives. Worked
like a charm, as long as you don't let DOS run
scandisk after a crash. You had to be careful with
some software that was DOS based too, such as
CDRWin.
