I have a Aptiva 2158-207 and wanted to upgrade the processor. The
motherboard is a Acer V72MA. Currently the unit has a AMD K6-2/400Mhz CPU,
256MB ram, the board has 512kb L2 cache, 100MB frontside buss. What is the
fastest CPU I can install on this board.? Can it be a PII or a AMD? Thanks. |
Easy question: k6-2 550
The chipset and the cpu socket set the limit for a motherboard. Here
you have socket7.
There are no more options.

Here you have jumper settings for multiplier:

Going from 400 MHz to a k6-2 550 or 500 just implies changing the
multiplier from 4x to 5.5x or 5x. No other changes are required.
Nevertheless the change of cpu speed from 400 to 550 does not make a
miracle. The cpu is still too weak for software based DVD-play.

The power supply is extremely weak: 95 Watt. So you will have to buy a
300 or more watt power supply if you exchange the motherboard.
Ram slots takes up to 128 Mb per slot. But it has to be low density,
preferable double sided sdram. They are best found second hand.
