Could be some kind of new software you recently install?

You can try to disable the startup items in the Startup folder or the
regsitry to troubleshoot.

Automatic antivirus scan? Drive indexing process?

I too have noticed a large amount of drive activity
right after boot up of XP. In my case, AVG is doing
a boot up virus scan. But it runs a s a low priority task.

Use Sysinternals autoruns program to find out what is
running at boot up. You can then disabel it or force
it to run at a lower priority.
