Default Need advice on Internal DVD/Cdrom Combo drives - 12-16-2006 , 10:36 PM

I am getting a new computer. I need to know what drive(S) to get if I
want to burn and read both a dvd and cdrom.I have heard of combo drives
but do they burn and read both types of media? Also do these drives take
up 1 or 2 5 1/4 slots in the computer? Lastly, what speeds are these drives?

Thanks in advance,

BS

To varying degrees, yes. In general, any DVD burner today will handle several
CD types as well (e.g. audio CD, video CD etc). You can get into several
different DVD formats, with some drives offering more features than others.
Some are single layer (4.7GB) while others are both single or double (8.5 GB).
If you pay a _lot_ of money, you can get Blu-ray burners too.

The best thing to do is go to an online retainer's web site and look at the
features offered by various models from various companies. If the detail on the
retailer's web site is insufficient, you can find further detail from the
maker's web site.

Just one - they use the same slot or tray to hold the disk, regardless of type.

All over the map.

Do a bit of homework and you'll quickly see what's out there.
