Default random power off - 01-05-2005 , 06:23 AM

I have built a system like this:

- power supply: qtec silent 400W (new)
- case antec (old)
- motherboard asus cusi-m (old)
- cpu via nemehiah 1 ghz (old)

I used it a bit then I was busy for work and I have not used it for two
months.

Now I use it, it works, but some times it randomly powers off.
I am in the bios or under linux, doing nothing or at full load: it power
off. I have to detach power cord to be able to power on again.

Power supply seems good, I have tried on another computer.
Ram seems good: I have some spare dimms and I tried them all.

Power down happens also without hdd and cdrom.

What can it be?

Thanks in advance for any reply!!!!

It could probably be lots of things. My guess is one of the fan
connectors is loose and it "thinks" it's sensing a fan failure.

Or perhaps a fan really _has_ failed and it's overheating.

Another possibility is a bit of solder flash, or a screw head somewhere
is shorting something intermittently. Thermal or mechanical stress
could make that show up after a period of months. I'd probably go
through and re-seat all connectors and visually check all mounting
screws.

Of course, it could also be a component failure of some sort. Check for
bulging or leaking capacitors on the motherboard.

Given that the power supply is new, it's suspect, too.
