Default Reccomendations for Video Card - 05-16-2005 , 08:08 AM

I am new to the Matrox video cards, have been looking at the G450 and G550.
For a single CRT monitor, which would serve me fine??

Depends what you planned to do.
I use a 450 for 'office' work, running two monitors with a cloned
display. It works just fine ( with some limitation as to the secondary
refresh rate ).

If you look on the Matrox site there's a handy comparision chart of
the various cards.

Sadly as a user of Matrox Cards since the original Millenium I would
suggest an ATI card if all you want is a single Monitor.

Any of the low end ATI Radeon Cards will give you an adequate output and
cost very little. All the drivers seem to be much more stable these days.

I still use Matrox on my Work Computers (G400MAX and P650) as for dual
screen work they are great, for my Home PCs and the Childrens PCs a mix of
ATI and Nvidia all seem to work just fine and you can play games on them as
well.

Matrox seem to have rested on their Laurels from the days of the G400MAX
when they were top of the heap. Unfortunately ATI and Nvidia have left them
behind in all areas including dual screens. (Bit Like Number 9 who were one
of the best in the 80s but have been long gone)
