Default IBM NetVista Freezes? - 05-08-2007 , 08:11 AM

I have an IBM NetVista that originally had Windows ME on it. Someone,
somewhere allong the line installed Windows XP Home Edition on it and
ever since it freezes within a couple of minutes of booting. I
reformatted the hard drive and did a clean install of Windows XP Home
Edition. The problem continues. I did see a Microsoft error message
that said something to the effect that the video controller (it gave a
number that I didn't write down) needs to be upgraded. Very shortly
thereafter he computer froze again. I think the video controller is
"onboard" on this machine. It may be that the existing video
controller played nice with Win ME but doesn't with Win XP.

Is there a way to upgrade an "onboard" video controller when you don't
have a functioning operating system? I suspect that if I could do that
it would correct the freezing problem.

A couple of times I encountered the blue screen and
"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Thanks.

The first think I always do on mystery problems is run a memory burn
in program for a day or so. A flaky memory chip can cause all sorts of
strange stuff particularly on a Windoze application
Thanks, but what, pray tell, is a memory burn?

Thanks, but what, pray tell, is a memory burn?
Test it! ;-)
I would advise at least one day of memtest86+ (->google).
And yes, many, many strange things are due to bad memory.
