Default keyboard prob with KVM - 11-27-2006 , 06:01 PM

Hi,
I am trying to get 2 PC's working with a Belkin 2-port KVM model F1DL102P
(same as a DK102P I believe except mine has audio switching as well.)

PC-A runs WindowsXP Pro SP2. PC-B runs a dual boot of Windows XP Home SP2
and Ubuntu (linux.) But to eliminate things I am only booting to XP Home.

Both PCs work fine on their won. When connected to the KVM the mice,
monitor and switching all works well. But the keyboard seems to be frozen
when connected to PC-B. With PC-A selected it works fine. I have swapped
keyboards and the captive leads from the PCs to the KVM box but to no avail.

What I have noticed is that if I go to PC-B and "Control
panel>keyboard>hardware" the drivers aren't listed when connected to the KVM
but they are there when the PC-B is connected without the KVM. With PC-A
they remain listed.
Any ideas and/or help please.
Thanks
Dave

Hmmm. Some automated keyboard detection gone wrong? I assume
this is an USB keyboard? What happens in Ubuntu?

Hi Arno,
No, neither the mouse nor keyboard is USB. Same thing happened in Ubuntu ie
keyboard froze but mice and monitor worked. It happens before I get to
either XP or linux as the keyboard freezes at GRUB the boot loader. Also as
I mentioned it does it whichever captive cable I use from the KVM. Also
noticed that "keyboard" disappears in System>Hardware>Device Manager. Weird?
Help!

Hmmm. Must be some BIOS issue.

Well one possibility is that the KVM does a bad job of emulating
the keyboard. One computer's BIOS still can cope, while the other
does not detect the emulated keyboard. The only way I see to fix
this is a BIOS update or a different KVM switch.

Okay, well the "bad" PC" is the older one and the okay PC is a month old. So
sounds feasible.
FYI the older one has an ECS K7S5A MOBO and the BIOS is AMI dated 10/29/02
so I will try to reflash it, but never done this before. Fingers crossed.
Thanks
Dave

Good luck. Both for a clean flash and that it solves the problem.
