Default Laptop Overheating? - 02-12-2006 , 05:59 AM

Dear Newsgroup

My apologies if this is the wrong location, I couldn't find a laptop
hardware forum.

I had a Packard Bell Easy One Silver which occasionally overheated and
turned itself off when placed on a soft surface (duvet, chair etc) that
blocked the fan. Obviously, I avoided doing this, but whilst on loan to my
brother it was placed on a bed and overheated and cut out.

Since then, it hasn't powered up. When pressing the power button, the power
light flashes for a millisecond and then... Nothing. No screen, no fan, no
drives. I fear that one of the components must have burned out (it did used
to get too hot to touch, even when it was ventilated properly), but does
anybody have any idea which component may be at fault? Is there one piece
which is particularly susceptible to this, and could it cause the system to
just stop working all together?

Further questions welcome... I now have a dead laptop, so if anyone would
like me to take it apart and try replacing bits, I'm more than willing to
try!

Thanks

Nick

It will be an individual pice that gave out. Many are candidated for
this and many of them will have sufferd damage, so even if you find
the faulty part and replace it (assuming you can), the laptop is likely
to die again pretty fast.

Still, with the runing off I would suspect the CPU is gone (the part
that generated the most heat) and that is in allmost all cases
impossible to replace.

Advice: Cut you losses and don't invest more time into this
machine. Get a new one. Preferrably one with a long warranty
(3 years or more), since that gives tha manufacturer incentive
for more careful design.

First thing to check: the power supply.
