Default Powering a 5 1/4 floppy - 01-09-2006 , 03:43 PM

Trying to use an old 5 1/4" floppy drive in a project I'm working on
and need to know if I need to do anything other than supply 12volts to
get it to spin. Must I have a disk in it ? Are there any leads that
must be conditioned?

I assume you want it just to spin, not to work as floppy?

Then you need to do the following:

1. Supply 12V _and_ 5V.
2. Pull the correct drive select line to 0V
3. Pull the corret motor enable line to 0V
4. Depending on the drive you may have to close it (as if a floppy
were in it). Some drives also may need to have an actual floppy
in.

Pinout for the connector is, e.g., here:
