Default Acer vertical lines/shimmer - 03-10-2006 , 07:44 PM

My Acer AL2416W, which I got just five weeks ago, has been getting
vertical lines -- actually alternating light and dark bands about 2 mm
wide on 1920 x 1200. They appear intermittently, but more often when the
screen is predominantly white. There are also patches of white shimmer
which appear and vanish in roughly horizontal streaks. The problem
started about a week ago, but went away for a while after I turned the
brightness down from maximum to 60%. Now it's back.

My video card is an Nvidia Riva TNT2. I'm running Win98 on an HP
Pavilion 8500. I've tried changing refresh rates, but the only choices
available are Adapter Default, Optimal and 60 Hz, none of which get rid
of the lines.

Also tried searching for a new video driver, but the only one I could
find is for Windows XP.

Is this monitor just incompatible with my machine? Is there any point in
sending it back for service? Did I buy a lemon?

Is there a customer support toll free number among the documents?
If so, you should try that first - they may know of a problem, or how
to remove it. Worse case is they should at least exchange it for you.
