Default ATI 9500 Pro & windows 98 ??? - 06-24-2003 , 09:22 AM

Hi all,

After many years running an over clocked Celeron at
500 mghz... woohoo!! and a voodoo 3 2000 card I am
upgrading my system.

Still on a budget, but this is what i picked:

Epox EP-8RDA+ motherboard
AMD 2500+ Barton
2 sticks of Twinmos/Winbond memory 3200
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
Maxtor 80 gig 7200 RPM drive
420 watt case
LiteOn 52x burner

Questions...

1 - The ATI box says I need windows XP, Is this
true, or can i stay with windows 98?

2 - I have never used XP, so is there a big difference
between the two? Should I upgrade now with the new
install?

The system will be used for a few games and a home office,
hooked to a D-Link 604 router and DSL.

Other devices:
Canon Lide scanner
Kyocera fs1000+ laser printer
Cannon BJC 4300 for the few color prints I do

Thank you for the help

Kelly

I had no problem finding Windows 98 drivers for this video card on the
ATI web site.

I would recommend switching to XP at this point in time. XP uses the
Windows NT kernel instead of the old DOS/Win9x kernel found in Win98.
As a result, it is *much* more stable. Your system has more than
enough horsepower to run XP (assuming that you install a total of 512
MB (or more) of RAM). But be sure you have driver support for your
peripherals and that your important application programs will run
under XP. XP has pretty good compatibility with older titles. Most
likely you will need to buy new versions anti-virus and similar
utilities, but probably not much else. Also be aware of the legal and
political implications of product activation and other digital rights
management found in XP. If you decide to go with XP, be sure to buy a
cheaper OEM version since you qualify for it with the new system.
