Default Cheap, simple PC PVR? - 10-08-2003 , 07:07 PM

Can anyone tell me how to do this or point me in the direction of
information to do this:

I want to cheaply and simply add basic PVR capabilities to my existing PC.
My PC is an AMD 1200mHz w/ 756MB RAM, 80GB HD, nVidia GeForce 4MX, SB Live!,
etc. I have cable for my broadband connection and want to split a line off
of it to use as my video input. All I need this for is recording a handful
of major network TV shows that I like to watch, but am rarely home in time
to do so. Quality should be decent, but doesn't have to be outstanding as
all I'll be doing is watching the show on the PC and then deleteing it.

ANY help appreciated, all I can find online is information regarding how to
built a powerhouse media center type machine from the ground up. Thanks!

Go down to CrapUSA and pick up any TV board they have. They'll all do
what you want reasonably well either using the bundled software or one
of the third-party packages.

There's a gizmo called the ADS Instant DVD that compresses video in
hardware and streams it over USB to your hard disk:
http://www.adstech.com/

Some people complained about audio sync problems, particularly with MB
integrated audio, but they have Instant DVD 2.0 that may improve that.
I didn't need audio, and the video quality was very good. No CPU
problems, since the hardware encoding is in the box.

Costs about $150-200 new. It sells on ebay for as little as $50-70
for the older version.

I use an ATI TV Wonder VE that cost me less than $40.00 US. This tuner
comes with capture and viewing software. I use open source TMPEnc to
edit and VideoLAN for viewing.

I really have had a great time with this and recommend it highly.
