Default Correct size for PAL video - 09-05-2003 , 07:49 PM

Hi,

I have a security program that shows a small captured pix and a short
video of a scene but it seems a little off size - sort of stretched.

It is set for small 160 x 120 and large 320 x 240.

What sizes should it be for PAL or doesn't it matter as it will only be
seen on a monitor?

Thanks Rock

If you only intend viewing on a monitor then the actual size does not matter
as long as the aspect ratio on the monitor is the same as that on the
recorder ie so that no skewing occurs. Btw, PAL is 352 x 288.

Actually, PAL isn't any particular format - it's a color
encoding method. It is most commonly used with
a 625-line, 50 Hz timing, as in Europe and elsewhere.
The 625 (total) line systems are generally assumed to
have around 576 active lines; in fact, the standard
625/50 DVD image format is 720 x 576 pixels (vs.
720 x 480 for the U.S. standard, 525/60, "NTSC"
system).

325 x 288 is not directly related to PAL or 625/50,
other than being a fairly good way to express a
single FIELD of 625/50 (which like all standard
broadcast TV in interlaced). 325 x 288 is known
as the "Common Image Format" (CIF), and is
common in digital TV camera sensors, etc., for
that reason.
