Default Emissive? - 02-23-2006 , 02:13 PM

Hi all,

I was reading about Electrophoretic Displays (EPDs). In regards to
electronic ink, are they considered emissive or non-emissive?

Quote:
From what I've read so far, emissive devices generate (modulate light)
at the actual display (e.g. LEDs). Right? If so, then technically
electronic ink does not generate its own light source. It's just very
reflective.

Any insights?

Thanks! I'm new to this topic.

Non-emissive.

Correct; electrophoretic types are reflective. An emissive
display by definition generates its own light. The LCD is
sort of a gray area - the LC cell itself is simply a light valve,
or light modulator, but when coupled with a backlight as LCDs
are most commonly used in notebook PCs, desktop monitors,
and TVs, LC displays are functionally emissive devices.

Other large-screen direct-view types (PDPs, FEDs, OLEDs,
EL, and of course the CRT) are definitely emissive technologies.
