Default Monitor image permanantly distorted? - 02-23-2006 , 12:30 AM

My 19 inch Mitsubishi CRT Diamond scan 930sb monitor may not be dead,
but it's clearly sick, probably requiring an expensive repair.

But just thought I would get some opinions.

Never had any problems with this monitor over the past few years until
I tried to change my display properties in windows xp today. All I did
was hit the advanced button and the monitor looked like it went to
change resolutions but instead a strange Japanese body of text
appeared on the screen. I turned it off, and when it turned on again
the image was severely distorted. The screen was severely curved at
the edges with a lot of black space at the top and bottom. I'm fairly
certain its a monitor issue since the screen has the same distortion
upon booting up and when using my xbox 360 with a vga cable adapter.

Now the geometry controls have allowed me to make the picture look
somewhat more normal, but the coloring is also not right. Washed out
would be the way to describe no matter how I adjust the monitor
settings. The monitor image is even more distorted and curved at
lower resolutions and refresh rates but it's not right at any
settings, with the default windows vga driver or nvidia drivers.

Should I even bother contacting NEC/Mitsuibishi tech support tomorrow
and sending it in for repairs? I know it will be expensive and would
rather just get a decent widescreen lcd. Too bad though, this was a
great crt monitor.

I use the same monitor at work. Have you tried resetting to factory
defaults?

Did you go back to widdoze safe mode & check it? you may have changed
to a pixel format or refresh it can't handle.

Well, I tried hooking up a laptop to it and an xbox 360 with the same
results so I don't think it has anything to do with my video card or
windows. Could be the vga cable I suppose but its the kind that is
soldered into the back of the monitor so it doesn't help me.

Anyway, I talked with tech support today and the guy seemed to think
the monitor probably needed repair. It's still under warranty for
another 7 months, but now I have to decide whether its worth it to
pay 70 bucks to ship it for repair when you get a comparable used
model on ebay for near that price. Or if I should just get a new lcd
monitor, I don't really want to get a cheaper one and take a step
down from this quality CRT, which means Ill have to spend quite a bit
for a 19 or 20 inch that can exceed 1280 x 1024 resolutions.
