Default Video card failed? - 09-04-2006 , 05:44 PM

I have an old PII PC that is running Win95 and Linux. The video card
seems to have failed because I get blinking and scattered dots when I
try to run with any monitor. I have booted into text mode in Linux and
was able to run that way so I'm guessing there is a problem with the
video card. It fails in both Win95 and Linux.

Does that sound right? If so can anyone recommend a video card that
will work with this old 200Mhz PC? All of the ones I find want higher
powered PC's or later versions of Windows. I do not want to upgrade
Windows on this machine.

Thanks

Heh. Doesn't sound so different from a Trident card I once had.
Might be the video card's RAM.

Nvidia has Win95/98/ME drivers and pretty good Linux drivers; you
might try something in the Geforce MX 4000 series, and even that is
overkill for your box. ATI claims support only for Win98 and their
Linux drivers are only so-so. I assume from your CPU speed that your
motherboard doesn't support AGP, so you'll need to get a PCI video
card. Newegg's got a selection of cheap PCI Nvidia-based cards.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into it.

I recently had to obtain some PCI cards that needed to work with
Win98. I bought some ATI cards and some Nvidia. The Nvidia's didn't
work. The card the did work was a Radeon 7000 board.
