Default Reformat Hard Drive - 01-24-2006 , 09:05 PM

I have my sons computer which is basically unusable at this point. I see a
program clz running in the task window which I assume is part of the clz
(kleez) virus? Regardless, the pop-ups completely control the pc. It takes
30 minutes or more just to boot up.

I tried reinstalling WindowsXP. Helped a little, but not enough. I really
doubt I could get any virus removal tools to work as I can hardly even get
the start window to appear.

My plan was to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windowsXP. Can't
format the drive containing windows, so I created a boot floppy from my
computer. (I used the WinXP format dialog and selected "make a bootable
disk".) The "format" routine is not on the floppy, so that plan didn't
work. (In previous windows versions I made boot disks with a switch for
adding sys files. That doesn't appear to be an option any more.)

Any ideas on how best to clean the hard drive and reload windowsXP would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The master boot record has undoubtedly been zombied, so you're going to need
something to write a nice new one. You can download boot diskette images
(www.bootdisk.com) and a dos fdisk http://www.bootdisk.com/utility.htm
Add the fdisk to a bootable DOS diskette and do an 'fdisk/mbr' you'll take
care of that.

From there you essentially have a virgin drive...

Thanks. I have my PC which is fine. Can I create the boot disk on my
machine, and is there already an fdisk program as well, or do I need to buy
it from the site you referenced?

Thanks again for your help.
