Default Multiple MAC Addresses - 04-10-2007 , 03:37 PM

We have an integrated Intel NIC in one of our Dell servers which is
reporting two MAC addresses to the switch. The other integrated NIC on the
same server only reports one. Any ideas what could be causing this?

NIC virtualization software?

We are not doing any virtualization on this machine.

I don't mean full system virtualization, just NIC virtualization. There
is software available (mostly for clustered systems) which allows you to
transport MAC addresses from one machine to another. It's not that hard
to do, you just create a virtual MAC address in software and if the
cluster fails over, then it transports the MAC address over to its
backup machine.

You did not mention whether this server was pre-installed with software
when you bought it from Dell, so I'm just throwing out some possibilities.

This server was completely wiped clean and had a fresh copy of 2003
installed recently. No NIC virtualization software is installed. Thanks
for the replies.

Then maybe it's something much simpler, how about if there's a hub with
two devices attached in series with that switch? Is your network room a
mess of cables like many other places?
