Default PCMCIA vs. CardBus? - 07-20-2005 , 09:34 PM

I am trying to get a Linsys WPC11 version 4 CardBus wireless network
adapter to work in a Win98 SE notebook that was purchased in 1997.
Linksys support says it will work.

When I plug the card into any of the three sockets and check the PCMCIA
applet in Control Panel it says that there is no card present. The card
works fine in a four year old Dell Inspiron 8000 running XP. My 3Com
3C589B Ethernet card works in all of the sockets on the Win98 PC.

IIRC CardBus hardware supports both CardBus and PCMCIA while older
hardware supported PCMCIA only. Is it possible that the hardware in
this old notebook will not work with a CardBus card? Is there a way to
tell with certainty that this is the problem? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

How about saying what brand and model the older laptop is?

One way to tell would be to google for your laptop and check whether
the specs say it supports cardbus or not.

If only it were that easy.<g> The computer is a Fosa AP6200T. It is a
clone made in Taiwan marketed by a couple of different vendors in the
U.S. under their own name and model number. I _think_ that it was
actually manufactured by Kapok of Taiwan. However, I just discovered
that Fosa is still in business and I found an email address for their
service department (you must speak Chinese to talk to them on the
phone) so I'll try that.
