Default Problem with wireless and USB 2.0 cards - 09-30-2005 , 05:04 PM

Hi -
I've had a wireless G PCMCIA card for quite some time in my laptop. I
also need to use a USB 2.0 card in my other PCMCIA slot. My USB card,
and all others I have seen have such a thick profile that they push
down on the wireless card and cause it to have trouble seating, and it
even can interfere with the reception.

Any ideas for a low profile USB 2.0 card?

I had a D-Link DUB-C2 cardbus adapter for USB2 but caused so many
problems I gave up on it.

I bought an ADS Tech Dual-Link cardbus adapter DLX-181 that arrived
today. Nice card: two USB2 ports (one powered via adapter, one
unpowered), one firewire 6-pin and one firewire 4-pin ports.

Most support and forum gurus say not to install the proprietary drivers
but to let W2K with SP4 find and install its own drivers. I did this
but to no avail. I suspect all my enhanced USB2 drivers were screwed up
due to the stupid D-link/OWC drivers. (see previous post in this list).

So I installed the drivers that came on the CD (ALi drivers) and card
delivers USB2 speeds. 9g of data transfered to my external HD in 20
minutes (vs. 2.5 hours previously). ADS Tech card and drivers are just
dandy. USB2 speeds and Firewire when needed.

I checked the size against my Linksys Wireless Cardbus adapter and they
are the same thickness.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem, and the ADS DualLink PCCARD does not look
like it will go in at the same time as the wireless card due to the
connector end being too thick. I searched for: usb2 pcmcia dongle
and had a few hits on some that will fit because the connectors are on
the dongle, but all of the cards are no-name brands which I do not
want to mess with (ie, typical driver problems, etc) ...

Oh duh! Of course I see what you mean. What was I thinking?

Yes you need a USB card with a dongle, IBM sells a branded USB2 cardbus
with dongle. Don't know about other manufacturers or who makes the IBM
card.

Thanks for all of the replies - I've been looking for a USB2 with a
dongle for quite a while - thanks! I've solved my problem in a
differnent way. I've added a wireless b/g mini PCI card to my laptop
which takes away the need for the wireless PCMCIA. I got the Intel Pro
2200 B/G. Although it says it is only for Centrino chips, I read
somewhere that it would work for all Intel chipsets. I bought it for
$29.95 on Amazon, and it installed without a hitch, perfectly!
