Default Adaptec USB Card: Computer manager sees drives, desktop doesn't? - 01-08-2004 , 06:51 PM

It's an Adaptec AVA 5100b PCI USB-2 card.

I've got another multi-outlet USB card that's working fine and the Adaptec is
replacing a USB/FireWire card that was also working.

With the Adaptec card in there, my USB devices appear a-ok when plugged into the
other card, but do not appear on the Windows desktop when they're plugged into
the Adaptec card. They *are*, however, visible through Computer Management
when I expand the "Removable Devices" list.

Also having problems with one of their FireWire cards - but that card is not in
the PC at this time...

Can anybody suggest anything in the line of troubleshooting this thing?

So far:

- Installed latest driver
- Checked CMOS and set BusMastering=Enabled
- Rebooted about fifty times...-)

Did a little Googling, found the Adaptec driver does not support dual-cpu
systems (which I have...).

Uninstalled the Adaptec driver, installed the native Windows driver that came
with SP 4.

Seems to be running a-ok.

Which begs the question: why did I spend twenty bucks more to buy the so-called
"name brand"?

Geeze, heaven forbid Adaptec should save people all those manhours by putting
the dual-cpu limitation on the "PC System Requirments" list on the fushluggener
box where it belongs...
