Default Problem with driver of smart card reader - 02-08-2005 , 11:17 AM

Hi,

I currently have a big problem with a driver of a smart card reader
(USB). It's from SCM Microsytems, type STR 391. I have a brand new
Windows XP SP2 on my PC. I am able to install the newest driver (v 1.64)
without any problems. The installation test software says the following:

Microsoft Windows XP
Version 5.1 Service Pack 2 ( Build 2600 )
Check der Installation
Gerätetreiber STR1002k.SYS Version 3.2.0.3. ist installiert.
(driver...is installed)
Gerätetreiber STR391.SYS Version 1.3.0.1. ist installiert.
CT-API DLL CTrsrW32.DLL Version 1.9.1.0. ist installiert.
GK-API DLL Version 1.32.0.1. ist installiert.
Test der CashMouse Gerätetreiber (device driver)
CashMouse STR100 Treiber nicht geladen. (driver not loaded)
CashMouse STR391 Treiber nicht geladen. (driver not loaded)
Ergebnis (result)
Fehler bei der Kommunikation mit den CashMouse Gerätetreibern - Test
abgebrochen!
(error concerning the communication with the cashmouse device drivers -
test aborted!)

The test output is -10 (err_trans).

The firmware update program says:
No STR391 connected to the PC! (--> ???)

It seems that the drivers are all installed correctly, but somehow
Windows doesn't find the reader itself. I checked my USB ports, but they
are all working fine. The reader gets power and is beeping ;-) I tried
to uninstall and install the driver again - nothing. I tried to install
the driver manually (without the installation program) - no way. I tried
several USB ports for the smart card reader - the result stayed the same.

The manufacturer, SCM Microsystems, has an own website for these smart
card readers (unfortunately only in German: www.cashmouse.de). There is
another problem in the FAQ described which I thought could be mine, too.
It's about having a Logitech Wheel Mouse working together with the smart
card reader. As I have a Logitech Wheel Mouse, I tried to follow the
steps to get my reader working, but that didn't work out either.

My question is: what else can I do to solve the problem? Are there any
other issues known with the smart card readers of SCM Microsystems
running on Windows XP? Has anyone perhaps heard of this problem?

I hope that anyone of you can help me out...please! Otherwise I can't do
any home banking, and I don't want to get any further mail from advocats
:-) If you want to get details of my problem, just let me know.

Thanks in advance,

- Matthias

You often need to install USB device drivers without the device
attached.
Then when you plug in the device, it is recognized and loads the
driver.
For some reason, you often can not install the driver after the device
is attached, perhaps because it is recognized incorrectly.
Read and follow the install process carefully.
Before you do that, uninstall the driver and ensure it disappears from
the Control Panel Device Manager and Add/Remove Programs lists (select
device/driver and click Remove) before you attempt to reinstall it.
